What's Love Got To Do With It? (The Secrets Of Becoming Us)
It's not something that I talk about often, but a few years ago I made the decision to separate from my then partner (and the father of my child). It wasn't a decision that I made lightly. One of the positive outcomes of what was a really crappy time in my life, was that it made me really curious about love, relationships and becoming parents. It was also coincidentally around the same time I came across Elly Taylor, and her Becoming Us™ Facilitator Training. It's a very in depth course and it's based on her experience of over 15 years as a relationship counsellor, and after umming and ahhhing and stewing over it - I enrolled last year.
What I discovered is that there are 8 stages from when you first unite with someone as a couple - to 'Becoming Us'.
I have to admit I hadn't even read the book Becoming Us when I started the course, and in a way I think that helped me.. because moving through the course helped me work through the book. I began to see how perfectly normal much of my experience actually was... and how common the everyday issues of moving through the stages of Becoming Us can cause conflict prenatally and at birth and postnatally.
The course is packed full of research, links and statistics. For me it was the missing piece of my doula training. Elly teaches you all the 'seeds' that doulas and birthworkers should plant with expectant parents as well as providing awesome tools for you to work through Becoming Us with your clients.

The answer you might find is that Love itself is only one of many, many things that cause conflict in the pregnancy and postpartum, and that there ARE so many things we can do to prepare for Parenthood. Thank you Elly!!
